Normally a love for music doesn’t just happen, but is purposely nurtured by parents in the home. Below are some ideas to do just that!

  • Listen at home – Make quality music available in the home and purposely listen to it with your children.  This includes different types of classical and instrumental music.
  • Make music at home – If you play an instrument, play it often in front of your children.  They will naturally want to play as well.  You can also have them make music by utilizing rhythm instruments or providing access to various other instruments.
  • Note interesting music – When you hear an interesting piece, make a note of it and bring it up with your children later.  This shows that YOU have an interest and will encourage them to listen more closely and talk about it, or even play it.  Talk about what you like or don’t like, how it makes you feel, etc.
  • One instrument – Encourage them to start on one instrument and become proficient with that before moving on to additional instruments.  There is a certain learning curve required before playing goes from pure work, to fun and enjoyment.  If there are too many instruments involved, they can never cross this line.  Piano and guitar are options that don’t require special breathing or memorized finger positions, so they sound better from the start; however, there are various options.
  • Performances – Take your children to performances and concerts (classical) whenever possible.  This shows them the connection between practice and performance, and further exposes them to music that they might like to play at some time.  On top of this, it is can be fun!
  • Quality instruction (discussed later) – Find a quality instructor and mentor for your children.  This can work wonders to reinforce what you are doing in the home and solidify a love for music in your children.  Work closely with their instructors to outline goals and get on the same page.

Your children may not become musical prodigies, but you can do everything possible to nurture a love of music and all of the benefits that come with that.
